ART WORKS
Houses and Occupants, 1991

This is a series of works in which black and white photographs taken inside the V&A Museum, London are backed onto excessively thick glass so that they are distorted and with a greenish hue. Within the photographs, reflections take on equal substance as the objects chosen to form our history. The contents of the display cabinets become jumbled with thier guards and visitors too. The works speculate on the validity of any particular interpretation of the past but also enjoy the chaos of our attempts to seal it.

These works were first exhibited in Show Hide Show, 1991, curated by Andrew Renton at Anderson O'Day gallery, London. The show also included Jake Chapman, Sam Taylor Wood and Alex Hartley. Houses and Occupants were amongst the first works sold by the artist. Two were bought be Charles Saatchi together with the first Ink Pad. They were later donated to the Arts Council collection.
